What is this alchemy?
These apples were devoid of any sweetness or texture.
They fell to the ground and were ignored for three months or more
By the mice, the rats, the fox and cats,
And by my good self.
——————
The frost did all he could
To sink his icy claws into them.
The sun frowned upon them,
The rain fell over them,
Leaves covered them,
Mud caked them,
And they remained inert.
——————
Then came I, at end of January
When all other distractions had passed,
And collected them up.
I showed them to a friend,
“Cook em”, said she.
And I thought she meant me to sugar them,
To hide their inferiority with better things.
But she persisted,
——————
“Only a little butter”, she insisted.
And eventually I tried;
Take four dull pointless, even foul apples
Cover the bottom of a small fry pan with butter,
(I added a teaspoon of sugar),
(If that),
Add the abominable fruit, cut quite small,
Put a lid on the pan,
Eat toast,
(With marmite or jam),
(As you like),
Stir,
Finish toast,
Fill a jam jar,
Eat the remainder with yoghurt or cream.
And tell me what you think!
That was one good friend!
Gwen.
